Maine 8th grader voted Sports Illustratedβs high school boys athlete of the week
by Matt Junker- Sports Editor of The Bangor Daily News
Quinn Pelletier has netted more recognition for his performance in the Maine high school basketball tournament, this time at the national level.
Pelletier isnβt even in high school yet, but he has won the vote as High School on SIβs national boys athlete of the week for Feb. 17-23.
An eighth grader from Madawaska, Pelletier won the recognition with βan overwhelming 64.25 percent of the vote,β according to High School on SI, which is the high school sports arm of Sports Illustrated magazine.
Pelletier scored 43 points in Madawaskaβs Class C North regional final loss to Mattanawcook Academy on Feb. 22. He shares the recognition with girls national athlete of the week Maddy Shirley, a junior basketball player who scored 46 points for Evansville Central in Indiana.
Around 15,000 votes were cast in the boys poll. Sports Illustrated does not allow automated voting for these athletes of the week features, though people are not limited to one vote. Nearly 50,000 votes were cast in the girls poll.
Pelletierβs 43 points in the regional final helped him earn the first BDN all-tournament team class MVP in memory for an eighth grader. It capped off an impressive tournament run for Pelletier, who scored a total of 71 points in three games, and for the Madawaska Owls team that went further in the playoffs than any previous team from the Aroostook County town.
Pelletier said Tuesday that he is βthankful for everyone who supported me and voted for me.β
After his 43-point performance, Pelletier was unaware and not particularly interested in how many points he scored, emphasizing that, βItβs not a one-man sport.β
His focus in an interview late last week was not on the history he made as an eighth grade MVP, but on bringing a future championship home to Madawaska.
Pelletier, who is 14, does some individual training with Matt MacKenzie, the longtime player development coach for Cooper and Ace Flagg. Pelletier also plays on a club basketball team that MacKenzie directs.
MacKenzie told the Bangor Daily News last week that Pelletier, a 6-foot-4 forward, is βgoing to be really special for years to comeβ if he can continue to develop his perimeter game. MacKenzie sees Pelletierβs skillset improving as he gets more comfortable with the ball in his hands and playing away from the basket.
βHis success is really built on the fact that he has such a high motor, and heβs incredibly competitive in terms of how hard he plays every game,β MacKenzie said.

PORTLAND, Maine β The Caribou girls were surely going to lose the Class B state final. Until freshman guard Quinn Corrigan saved the day.
Corrigan stole the ball and was fouled with less than a second left in overtime. She stepped up to the line and knocked down both shots, capping a game for the ages and the first state championship for the Caribou girls since 1983.
The Caribou girlsβ previous state championship in 1983 was in Class A.
βI just knew we needed a steal to get in front, and I just read their play,β Corrigan said after the Class B thriller.
βNo words, it feels so amazing,β she said.
The Vikings won 49-48 over a Biddeford Tigers team that just would not quit at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Saturday.
Senior guard Madelynn Deprey once again led the way for Caribou with 31 points on the day. But it was Corriganβs free throws that delivered the improbable victory when it seemed like all hope was lost for the Vikings.
βIβve never wanted something more. Iβve dreamed about this since I saw my brothers win back-to-back state titles six years ago,β Deprey said after the game. βTo be here, to play in this game, was just the biggest blessing ever. It was all I could ask for. And then to win was just unbelievable.β
Deprey said she was β100 percentβ sure that Corrigan would knock down those two free throws with the game on the line.
βQuinn thrives in that type of situation,β Deprey said.
Caribou coach Kayla Brown said Corrigan has been big for the Vikings all season long, and wasnβt surprised that she stepped up and hit those shots.
βIβve known she was capable of that all season long,β Brown said. βYou would not know sheβs a freshman just by watching her play on the court.β
Brown also credited her star senior, who is a finalist for the Miss Maine Basketball award.
βMadelynn was absolutely outstanding today,β Brown added. βThere was no way that she was going to be denied that win today.β
The Vikings matched a tenacious defensive effort from the Tigers, delighting the maroon swarm of Caribou fans who traveled hours to watch both their girls and boys teams compete for Class B titles in Portland on Saturday.
The girls have done their part, with boys next up to take on the Wildcats of York.
Caribou led 31-23 at the end of the third quarter after a layup from Biddeford at the buzzer, and the Tigers looked to have some momentum to start the fourth.
Deprey provided a critical six-point stretch in the fourth quarter, including an offensive rebound followed by a timely and-1 bucket to follow, to push the Caribou lead back to 38-28.
Thatβs when Biddeford flipped a switch, erasing that lead for Caribou and forcing overtime. The Tigers seemingly took control of the game in extra time, and Depreyβs two free throws in the final seconds appeared to fall just short with the Vikings still down 48-47 and Biddeford with possession of the ball.
Cue the heroics from Corrigan, who stole the inbounds pass and was fouled with .4 seconds left. She calmly stepped up to the line and delivered the championship win for the Vikings.
βThe girls just have so much composure, so much fight. All season long really weβve talked about just grinding it out,β Brown said after the win. βAnd sometimes we donβt win pretty, but we were able to grind it out. And thatβs what happened today. Just when it looked like it might be going the other way, we never gave up.β
Brown said Deprey tried to miss her second free throw at the end of overtime on purpose, in order for her team to have a chance at the rebound. They were still down two points at the time. But that second shot went in accidentally, leading to Corriganβs incredible steal and free throws.
βI donβt think anybody could have imagined that finish,β Brown said. βIt was just absolutely crazy.β
It was a roller coaster of emotions for the Caribou fans as they packed the stadium in Portland, having had to traverse pretty much the entire state to get there.
βItβs amazing. I look up in the crowd behind me, the sea of maroon, just the fans, the strength of the community,β said Caribou Athletic Director Evan Graves after the win. βThese girls have worked so hard. Itβs years of work.β
He noted the commitment from fans as well.
βAnd we have people in the stands who have given up a lot of time for this,β Graves added.
One of those fans in attendance Saturday was U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a Caribou native who spent time congratulating the girls after their win.
Collins said she has seen a lot of basketball games in her life, including the legendary 1969 Caribou game featuring Mike Thurstonβs last-minute heroics. But this one topped them all.
βIβve got to say, Iβve never seen a more exciting game than the Caribou girls game today,β Collins said. βIt was extraordinary. And the key was, they never gave up. Even when it looked like the time had run out, they kept playing with such heart.β

The Lynx kept their perfect season alive by holding off a determined Owl Team.
The Lynx started the game on a 7-0 run before the Owls finally got on the board. They took a 23-15 lead after one. They extended it with some hot shooting to a 39-17 lead.
The Owls made some adjustments and 8th grader Quinn Pelletier started to heat up, scoring 13 points in the third period, but the Owls struggled to get any stops and would trail 59- 46 entering the final stanza, the Owls would cut it to within 8 points but could not get any answer.
Meanwhile, Pelletier showed why he is the most talked about 8th grader in the state, showing of a variety of ways to get to the basket. When he found his way to the hoop blocked he made some nifty passes to get his teammates open looks.
Pelletier ended with a Tournament high of 43 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 4 assists.
The Owls ended the best season in school history with an overall record of 19-2 and the school’s first-ever regional runner-up plaque.
#1 Mattanawcook Academy (21-0) will take on top seed South champion Mt. Abram (20-1) in the state title game next Saturday, March 1st at 8:45 p.m. in Bangor. The Lynx and Roadrunners will both be seeking their first gold ball.
They were led by Kooper McCarthy with 28 points and, Andrew Oliver had 18

Shanelle Rossignol an 8th grader from Fort Kent, did one of the best National Anthems that I have heard in all my years attending the Tournament tonight.
I have heard her sing a few times during the regular season while watching on NFHS. Tonight was different, She confidently walked in front of the Table unto the court and commanded everyone’s attention. She left to a loud applause!
She is the daughter of proud parents Samantha and Dom Rossignol.
After she returned the mic to the table, Her equally proud Grandfather, Matt Rossignol greeted her with a warm embrace and a knowing smile, before she vanished into the crowd.
We’ll be hearing more from her in the future!

The Central Aroostook girls had a nice team breakfast at their motel before heading to the Cross Center for their 10:00 AM game with Wisdom.
Game is streamed on https://www.whou.live/…/g6-at-g5-girls-class-d… today. You can also listen on 101.9 The Rock
Have fun girls!!!!

Charlie Pierce sends Central Aroostook to the Finals

FIRST EVER VIDEO REVIEW IN MPA TOURNAMENT HISTORYβ¦β¦BOTH TEAMS WAIT IN ANTICIPATION AS CHARLIE PIERCE RELEASES THE SHOT
Tied with seconds left, the Panthers got the ball into the post where Charlie Pierce was able to get a shot off. It went in as the horn sounded- but wait!!!
The Officials had to go to the replay monitor to see if it counted. This is the first year that the MPA has allowed video review on game-deciding shots.
It was determined that the ball was still in her hands as time expired- BUT it was obvious that she had been fouled.
So 0.1 was put back on the clock, to make the clock light back up red- but there was NO time left on the clock, and Pierce went to the line, where she calmly hit the first shot to send the Panthers to the finals on Saturday
Trailing by 6 points, heading into the final period, The Panthers dug in deep and applied more pressure as Lilly Burtt began to shake free for some easy baskets,
Maggie Mahan hit a huge three to give the Panthers a lead, but the Pioneers came back and got the ball to Ava Lerman and the Junior calmly hit a three of her own to tie the score, setting the stage for the final procession.
With the Pioneers overplaying against Burtt and Mahan, they got the ball to Charlie Pierce in the middle. Pierce made the shot, which was eventually waved off after the review, then hit the free throw that sent the Panthers to the finals for the first time since 2020, when they won the Gold Ball in Class C.
Burtt ended up with 16 to lead the Panthers. Mahan had two huge three-pointers and finished with 8, Pierce had 6 including the game-winner and added 8 rebounds. Allen was held to 3 points and Stevie Pierce had a basket,
The Pioneers were led by Lerman with 13, Maddi Cyr had 7, Emma Soucy had 6, Kelsee Daigle 4, and 8th grader Peyton Roy-Wilcox. finished with 4
#2 Central Aroostook advances and will play in the Regional Finals on Saturday, February 22nd at 1 p.m. against the winner of the #1 Bangor Christian-#4 Schenck semifinal.
Wisdom ends their season with a 17-3 overall record

Although East Grand girls ended a tough season, senior Viking Isabella (Izzy) Cowger ended her high school career strong with 837 points.
Her leadership, constant smile and encouragement for her team will be remembered by all.
βNoteworthy, she averaged a triple-double over the last two weeks of the season (last 7 games), averaging 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 blocks.β
Congratulations on a nice High School Career and Thanks for the memories!!
This photo was taken from their magical tournament win during her sophomore year.
