1975 East Grand Vikettes
Girls had always played basketball in Aroostook County and throughout the State. However, they played under different rules.
In Maine, the girls’ basketball changed from six-on-six to five-on-five in the 1970-71 season.
Prior to that, girls basketball was played with six players each. Three players on the defensive end and three players on the offensive end of the floor.
In the fall 1974, rumors swirled that the State Principals’ Association (now the Maine Principals’ Association) was set to sanction a girls basketball tournament for the coming season. Those rumors were eventually proven to be true, setting the stage for the first-ever state championships in February 1975.
Morse fell to Gardiner in the Class A title game, while Lake Region beat Van Buren in Class B. Hall-Dale beat Katahdin in triple overtime in Class C, and East Grand defeated Richmond in Class D.
In 1975, Maine debuted its state girls basketball tournament, giving girls a chance to play for the same championships that boys had for over 50 years.
